The Neighborhood:
In the early 1900s, the village developed as a streetcar suburb of Milwaukee, with public transportation allowing residents to easily commute to the city. The village's center emerged along the streetcar lines on Oakland Avenue and Atwater Road (now known as Capitol Drive). Additionally, affluent Milwaukeeans began building mansions in the eastern part of the village along Lake Drive and the bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. The population grew to 1,255 by 1913, and in the 1910s municipal improvements included paved roads and sidewalks, gas mains, and street signs.[5] The Village of East Milwaukee changed its name to the Village of Shorewood in 1917.

Shorewood saw significant growth in the 1920s, with the quadrupling from 2,650 residents in 1920 to 13,479 in 1930. During the decade, as many as 200 new homes were constructed per year in the village, including work by Alexander C. Eschweiler as well as Flagg-system homes constructed by Arnold F. Meyer & Co. As the village population swelled, local municipal institutions became more organized. The village's health department organized in 1918; the police department, in 1920; and the fire department, in 1929. In 1928, the village's elected board of trustees hired a full-time village manager to head the village's day-to-day operations, and Shorewood has had a council–manager government ever since. Shorewood's school district also grew in the 1920s and was influenced by the ideas of philosopher John Dewey.

- If a security team is called due to an infraction of the house rules, the guest agrees to pay for the security team ($500 minimum) and the duration of the reservation, even if removed by the security team due to the infraction.
- Please DO NOT flush feminine products/paper towels/any foreign substance down the toilet (ONLY toilet paper). It is not good for the pipes and if there is an issue we may pass the charge onto the guest.

Summary: The strengths of this place are the location near City Market (great for meals, coffee, and dessert) as well as the overall layout of the downstairs unit and, in general, the furniture, as well as the well-equipped kitchen with a good stove and fridge. The management company was also very responsive. At the same time, I felt that the unit could use a bit more attention--particularly given that I've never had to jump through so many contract-type hoops to get a one-week VRBO rental before. The outside could use new paint; and the first wooden step is wobbly, while the back first step is not steady. These issues made it a challenge for my mother-in-law to visit us, particularly as there was no snow clearing done, although we stayed not just through the big snowstorm, but for four more nights after that. The management company did send over ice and a shovel when I mentioned that the snow removal people had not come by. Inside could use just a tad more attention--there's some gunk (admittedly quite hard to remove) on the oven knobs, and bits and pieces of screws from the quite comfy dining room chairs were lying about until I gathered them into a pile; one of the sheets had an ancient stain on it, and the bathroom sink could have drained better (I removed a lot of the hairs that were creating problems). I feel that if the owners spent one night in this place they could change it from a quite nice experience to an excellent one.
